work was always "Three Days in Roswell"
Comment: There
have been provided several versions of what actually happened
at the portal tower 5/22/01,
Apparently the portal-driven mergings caused some
confusion in the
initial months that were later sorted out as new information was
uncovered and incorporated
into "Dawn the Last Slayer's" narratives.

It was a hard 2 day drive to Roswell from Sunnydale.
Clare remembered how tired she used to be after a long cramped trip.
Even almost
5 months pregnant, she was only slightly uncomfortable.
"Want me to take over, sweetie?" she heard Glory's voice in her head.
"You could relax
and just watch and listen, like I've been doing." "Or," she laughed
mischievously,
"I could sing for you."
From their rocky start, with Clare having to suddenly replace her sister
Callie as the
new host for Glory at portal time, the two had evolved a special relationship
based
on some privacy and a lot of sharing and signaling. It had taken time,
but they were
almost like sisters now. They still had not found Callie, but neither
had given up.
"Pop in, please!" Clare laughed lightly, looking in the mirror to see
what Tess and Dawn
were doing in the back seat of Callie's SUV.
She was still watching a second later, but now as an observer, since Glory had morphed in.
The first thing Glory did was put a hand where their baby was. It fascinated
her to no end
that she was pregnant when she morphed in as Glory, since real gods
did not reproduce this
way.

Of course, it was Plan B to get her a godly body to regain her powers.
No secret after all this
time and with Buffy and, a finally at peace, Glory back from
their 5 month vanishing act on
the tower. That Glory-Glory relationship was no sister act yet. Both
were stubborn and critical
of one another, besides being mystified at exactly why they originally
had existed.

"Check on the girls," Clare told her in their silent communication
way.
Looking at the road and the outside mirrors very carefully, as she always
did, since she'd
rarely driven in her Ben's cars, Glory then glanced at the rearview
mirror.
Dawn was asleep against the far window, her long brown hair spilled
across her face and
breasts to her waist.
Tess was simply staring out the other window, remembering the memories
that had come
to her when she and Curupira had merged in the tower warehouse. The
trip and her
being morphed as Tess, with Curupira's persona discretely floating
separately, was
forcing her to remember her Roswell time, short though it was.

She had been recruited by Glory/Ben for some reason months before the
portal event.
Her mindwarp ability and her remarkable physical resemblance to Curupira
seemed to be
the initial reasons. That and their ability as a pair to jump to the
similar dimensions with donated
Key blood from the other dimension's helpless Dawn, who had been murdered,
along with the
entire gang, by her insane sister.

They'd finally told this to Dawn and the others. It had been hard,
but with Buffy back both had
to know more.
That brought a tear to her eyes that she could only banish by watching
Dawn sleeping,
to be reassured that this Dawn was still here, and the invincible Last
Slayer to boot, Tess
thought.

The end result of her and Curupira's merging had been to enhance
both their powers,
regardless of which form they were in. Tess now knew that she had been
the closest thing
in Roswell to a really powerful demon. Her powers were substantial
and barely developed
even yet.
She looked fondly at the face of Glory, showing her usual concentrated
effort when she
was driving.
Curupira wasn't happy about the way Tess pursued Glory, but it helped
bury her hapless
Roswell experiences, particularly since Glory was so ambivalent about
such matters, being
still a not-yet-fully-matured god. They had fun playing The Game, as
they called it.

"Just a girl like Dawn," as Buffy so eloquently put it about her Glory.
Both were so similar, except
in powers now.
Tess let her Curupiran self flow back into her and morphed.
She watched cars pass going the other way and at the dry scenery, that
was on occasion broken
by the strange evenly spaced little reddish cedar trees where there
was water underground.
She let her senses expand outside the moving vehicle. The sounds of
machines and the road
beneath were obvious.
There were some creatures in the air, underground and on the surface
itself. But not many of
higher order. She sensed more, but she could never go back to the forest.
She was no longer
naive and innocent, believing that she had a duty to protect her animals.
She was a different person. Not just because of the merging with
Tess. It was the sheer
variety of experiences, Dawn, Glory and the others, living inside with
human-made things instead
of in a cave. Realizing her powers as they increased with use. Maybe
there was more magic to be
acquired here in these dimensions than hers.
Sounds. People. New things. Machines. Friends. She personally slept
at night a floor below
a god. A god sharing a body with Clare. She and Glory didn't like one
another that much, but
they respected their individuality. Plus, both having bi-modal morphs
as a fact of life made
them have a lot in common.

She adored Dawn. They shared the apartment. Since both were ancient
in years, Dawn being the
Key, she being a demon, or near-god, plus her Tess memories, they had
much in common. Dawn
also had the added powers and immortality she'd bestowed on her after
the portal openings.
Outside of Tess, she'd never had a friend, more less lived daily with
them. The other exciting part
was Pat. Each day she fell even more hopelessly in love with him as
they studied her and Tess'
powers, played games, did things together, lots of things. They also
went to events or restaurants
or movies together. Often accompanied by Clare or Dawn or both.
[Ed - See a prior work, "Dawn the Last Slayer Part 3" for how this came about,]
Of course, she had to be Tess in public then, but it mattered not. She
was able to be both together,
or either, as she chose. She never thought twice about the bizarre
arrangement between Clare/
Glory and him and herself. The baby was the reason for the whole thing.
Glory's future
god-girl body growing more magical each day.
[Ed - See prior works, "Dawn the Last Slayer Parts 2 & 3" for how this came about,]
She morphed back to Tess. Too much thinking.
Restless, she squirmed her small, lithe and powerful body through the
space between the front
seats, touching the console and doing a twist to flip and fall into
the passenger seat in a quick
single fluid motion.

"Hi," she swept her long curly blonde hair from her face onto her shoulders
and smiled at
Glory.

...who glanced at her, "Still feeling like you've been here before,
huh, Honey?" Glory would
always be Glory in her manner of speaking. Where and how she'd acquired
her language
style was a mystery to everyone but her.
Pat had speculated that she watched too many movies on late night TV
after learning to
morph out of Ben about 1990, when he was 15 or 16, or so she said,
and Ben had
confirmed.
"Perhaps she first magically learned to speak 'American' as she always
had called it, from
the original 1984 movie, 'Valley Girl', or some of its TV and movie
descendants," he'd once
suggested to her after he and Curupira/Tess found it and watched it
on satellite TV once.
Glory ignored them and wouldn't watch the movie, so Clare had to do the honors.
Glory would watch the old dark-humored movie "Heathers" because the
casual killings
fascinated her. She also seemed to relate to the not so old Reese
Witherspoon high
school intrigue movie "Election", too.

It made them wonder whether Glory had been able to daylight morph out
of Ben for some
time before, while he was in middle and high school but without his
knowledge, in the late
'80's and early '90's. One day they'd have track down old year books
and see if there
was a Glory in some of the pictures in them, looking as she did now,
even then.
Sometimes they'd walk in on her watching TV movies and most were usually
high school
romantic or humorous ones, either old or new. Since she was technically,
and would be for
a long while until she acquired lots more power and experience, not
much older then
Dawn in maturity, it sort of made sense.
"You asleep ?", Glory waved her right hand in front of Tess without
taking her eyes off
the road ahead.
"Yes... uh, no...yes to the first question," Tess finally responded
after her unusually long
silence as she thought about Glory. "I just wish we were more separate
selves, like you
and Clare, sometimes. "Curupira is so much older, ancient really, than
me."
Glory chuckled, "Few are as old as her, and me and the other Glory,
or the Key, maybe,"
she agreed, checking the mirror as a car decided to pass her.

Glory was, surprisingly, a much more careful driver than Clare, being
newer to it. and in
spite of having access to Clare's skills and her own Glory body and
senses.

Tess smiled at the sheer irony of a god like Glory being a model driver,
letting people pass
her as she religiously stayed just under the speed limit, cruise control
or not. She could
imagine the other Glory, 'Buffy's Glory', as they called her when she
was not nearby, sending
bright balls of fire at anyone that dared to pass her.
'Hmm, did she even bother to drive anymore?', Tess wondered to herself.
Maybe she simply
flew, or teleported herself and Buffy place to place. No one seemed
sure. They were a strange
pair. But they were so content these days since moving into the Summers'
home after their
return from Glory's world.
Tess knew that Dawn was at least happy that they weren't trying to kill
one another and that
Buffy was smiling all the time. She and Glory seemed to spend a lot
of time reading magic
and other books, apparently working on refining Glory's magic powers
control techniques and
style.
A retired Slayer, truly a unique unprecedented oxymoron, coaching a god.
It was something to watch, especially when they moved from indoor magic
to outdoor projective
magic, the lethal kind.
"Look!", Glory woke her from her reverie and pointed briefly to a sign,
then put her hand back
on the wheel, "Roswell, 15 miles."
Traffic had picked up from a little to a little more, mostly more trucks
and pickups, the drivers
usually quickly passing, slowing down, and all trying to look down
Glory's loose top or up
her fairly short dress, until they realized she was obviously pregnant
and then most looked a
little sheepish.
At least until Glory glanced at them, smiled her best supernova radiant
smile, then mouthed
'asshole' and gave them a long look at her left blacknailed middle
finger pressed up against
the window, while she resumed looking ahead at the road.
She did it so often and automatically, that it rarely made much of a break in her conversations.
Tess thought it was funny and was always curious where she'd picked
up such a strange
collection of behaviors. It looked like another high school pattern
that shouldn't have existed.
Glory was always dismissive or evasive when she asked.
Dawn was mortified at her actions and tried to look the other way when
she could see a male
driver or passenger in a high vehicle coming up to pass on the left.
Which was often due to Glory's safe speed and her staying in the right
lane on multilane
highways. That was why Dawn usually rode on the right side of the SUV
most of the time, too.
Soon they were in the city limits of Roswell and Tess was looking for
street signs and trying to
remember where to turn off. Dawn had printed some maps off the internet,
but one look told her
they they weren't needed. Her memories were fine.

"Turn at the next street, Olive Street," she told Glory, who carefully
flipped her turn signal on a
full block before the street.
Tess liked driving with the more carefree Clare, but it was so cute
to watch Glory go through all
sorts of mirror scans before she did anything. She drove like a little
old lady on Prozac.
"Stop here..no, the next house. The Valenti one's 34 Olive, over there," Tess directed.
Glory parked at the curb without even hitting it.
Tess got out of the SUV, woke Dawn by tapping on the window until she
joined her and waited for
Glory to exit and press the button to lock all the doors with a multiple
click that she always listened
to clinically. "Why don't you just put a 'steal me and forget how to
drive" spell on it," Tess had once
initially suggested.
Glory had looked at her askance, "But we're supposed to lock our cars
when we leave them,"
she said, closing the topic.
Doing a half turn, Tess remembered the last time she was here. It was
a few weeks after Christmas,
her first in Roswell. She could feel that something more had transpired
here in this dimension than
in hers. Something that she was not going to be pleased with.
Dawn looked at her curiously, "Something wrong?" she asked.
"Just a sense that I'm out of place here in this Roswell. Timewise and
otherwise.." she trailed off.
She hesitated and opened her large travel purse, a more teardrop-shaped,
under and behind-the
-shoulder bag that could almost double as a backpack. Glory and Dawn
watched her carefully in the
late fall sunlight as they stood by the maroon SUV.

They couldn't figure out the purpose of what she was doing.
Tess pulled out her old New Mexico drivers license from the original
Roswell dimension and examined
it against her memories:
Tess Harding
F DOB: 05/02/1983
HT:
4'11''
WT: 95 lb
HAIR: Blonde
EYES: Gray
433 Crestview
Dr
Roswell, NM
Her memories confirmed this. Her fake father was Ed
Harding (Nasedo) and her fake mother
was Sheila. She'd supposedly been born
in Omaha, Nebraska on that date,
May
2, 1983.
She knew that there had been a date difference between the various dimensions,
they never
were the same. She'd not thought until now that there might be one
between the Roswell she'd
left with Glory/Ben after Christmas 2000 and the Roswell she was in
now almost a year later
from her point of view.
Why did she have this strange feeling of lost time?
She compared it to her California license. "Well," she said finally,
it's not anything physical. It's just
that I have a feeling of a large chunk of time passing while I don't
experience it. Crazy ?" Tess
put the licenses back into her bag. "I'm okay, " she smiled hopefully.
While she had been staring at the licenses to see if the dates were
different, Glory had faced the
SUV and morphed back to Clare. They walked up the few steps to the
door, Tess leading. The
bell didn't seem to be working. Tess could feel somehow that it had
been this way for awhile.
She couldn't see anything through the glass in the door. It was too
dark inside and too light
outside. She could see the reflection of Dawn and Clare behind her
and the SUV out across
the front yard on the street.
But again the impression of passed lost time.
Kyle practically jumped as he opened to the door in response to Tess'
knocking. He seemed
to be bracing for some sort of action, letting go of the door and raising
an arm toward Tess.
"Kyle... " Tess said, she wasn't sure whether he was going to attack
her or run past her. He was
still apparently undecided, but looked inexplicably afraid as he stepped
closer to Tess.
It made no difference, Dawn was instantly at her side and holding out
a hand against his chest.
"Kyle," she said firmly, looking up at him, "Stop or I'll hurt you.
She's not the Tess you know."
"Ava?" he guessed confusedly of Tess, stopping abruptly with his chest
against the diminutive
Dawn's hand, feeling as if he'd run into a post. Clare merely watched.
If he weren't so scared
looking, she thought, he might be reasonably attractive, in a lean-faced
sort of way. She'd been
around so many women so long now that she wasn't a good judge anymore,
she guessed.

She rubbed her visibly swollen tummy and promptly forgot him.
Maybe, she wondered, Glory, or even the baby, was casting a spell on
her to stop thinking
outside their little family. 'Commitments,' she grimaced. 'Damn you,
Callie, for getting me into this.
No, not really. But when I find you...'
[Ed - See a prior work, "Dawn the Last Slayer -Part 2", for how this came about]
"Ow," Kyle was grunting. "That hurt." He backed up a little into the doorway.
For some reason, Dawn stepped with him, maintaining a light pressure
up on his chest with her
open right hand. She could feel his breathing and rising pulse rate.
He looked into her big gray
eyes and saw something far older than her apparent late middle school
age.
Dawn stared back boldly, why she wasn't quite sure.
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
Clare and Tess watched this staring contest for a few seconds before
Clare got impatient,
"Dawn, reality to Dawn, " she called out.
Dawn slowly drew her hand back, "We're your salvation, in a sense,"
she said, "Let's go inside
and talk." Kyle had never seen someone like her. She exuded confidence
and a strange
sense of casual power that shouldn't be present for someone so apparently
young.
Old soul, he thought.
Tess and Clare followed Kyle and Dawn inside.
Kyle had seemingly forgotten about Tess. Then he remembered, "Who are
all of you ?"
he shut the door into the over-crowded den. Then he noticed for the
first time that Clare
was pregnant and motioned for her to sit on the couch.
Dawn and Tess promptly sat down on either side of her and all three smiled expectantly.
"Ah," Kyle finally pulled one of the dinette table chairs over so he
could sit on it and see
all of them. "Once again, "he looked at Dawn, "Who are all of
you ?"
"Bathroom? " Clare suddenly blurted out urgently.
As long as Glory was morphed in she could handle things without a visit
to the bathroom, hence
she did most of the driving. After a long period, and within minutes
after Clare appeared, she
had to go, immortal body or not.
Sympathetically, he pointed, "Down and to the right." She disappeared rapidly that way.
"Dawn," Dawn said cheerfully, "a Vampire Slayer From Sunnydale, California.
This is Tess
from another dimension. She's merged with my friend, Curupira, from
still another dimension."
It did sound rather lame to an outsider, she realized.
Kyle thought both descriptions were a joke. "She's Ava, the dupe,
right ?" he persisted. "Tess
is gone since May."
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
Tess responded, "Kyle, like she said, I'm not the Tess you might think
I am. In fact," she paused,
"I'm actually, as Dawn told you, a curious mixture of a parallel world
Tess and a demon from
another dimension. I have both sets of memories and both sets of powers,"
she smiled at his
facial expression.
Kyle was silent as he tried to transition from his first guess about
Ava to find some way to fit
this into his philosophical and reality view. "Aliens, yes. I was essentially
resurrected after
I was almost shot dead. But Vampire Slayers and demons...show me,"
he decided.
Tess did a very slow morph into Curupira, including her clothes into her green costume.
Dawn heard his deep intake of breath. But he wasn't afraid. Interesting, she thought.
"Except for the green, you look like Tess," he was fairly calm about
it. "So, are you a good
demon or a bad one?" he asked.
"Mostly good," Curupira answered with a laugh that was just like Tess'
laugh. "I gave Dawn here
immortality and powers."
"She's the Key...that opens portals between dimensions."
This was getting deep, Kyle wondered again if this were a put-on, or
was he in the middle
of another endless Tess mindwarp? "Am I mindwarped ?" he cut to the
core of the issue.
Curupira and Dawn looked at one another in real puzzlement. "Why would
you be mindwarped?"
Dawn finally asked. Kyle then gave them a brief summary of what had
happened, as he knew it,
in the months before May.
Clare came back as he started and sat down to listen also.
He finished, looking up at the ceiling in a gesture of confusion. "How
do I know what's real
and what's not ?"
"This...your...Tess must've been quite a lying bitch," Clare declared,
" and very powerful to
sustain this complex a mindwarp across that long a period on so many..."
she'd picked up
a lot of magic lore from bring in Sunnydale these many months.
"...impossible, " Curupira flash-morphed to Tess, her expression was
raw anger.
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
"Someone's lying. No one could sustain a mindwarp like that. It would
require many layers of magic
spells and warp powers that could only come from someone with real
magic. I have that, she
could not - until after the portals opened and if she merged with a
magic being, She left the day
before the Sunnydale portal opened, based on the date."
"What's real, what's not, whatever I want?" Kyle made the Zen-like query.
Dawn sighed. "I think I'll just beat some sense into you. A lot of pain
should allow you to identify
reality from mindwarp...maybe..." she slid up on the sofa arm and brought
both feet onto the
cushion. Then she simply stared at him, elbows on her jeaned
knees.
Dawn sighed. "I think I'll just
beat some sense into you.
A lot of pain should allow you
to identify reality from
mindwarp...maybe..."... Then
she simply stared at him...

"Oh God," Clare said, annoyed, "not the staring again."
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
Looking at the little brunette, Kyle grew uneasy again. Aliens he could
get used to, Like
with Tess for so many months. The memory of her mindwarp and her accidental
killing
of Alex colored all his feelings for her.
But demons...and just what was a Vampire Slayer anyway? This little
slip of a girl couldn't
possible be capable of killing. Yet she stared at him with those big
eyes like he was on the
menu. She also had not blinked yet.
The blonde pregnant one seemed like a safe one to talk to. Surely she was normal.
"What's your story?", he asked her, breaking the lock he had on Dawn's
eyes with some
difficulty. It was like she was casting a spell on him.
"My name's Clare. I'm the host for the god Glory. Wanna see her?" she
responded with
a mischievous look. Glory morphed in and Kyle closed his eyes for a
few seconds, took
a deep breath, "I'm going to regret this," he said carefully, "Are
you The God?"
Glory laughed and patted her abdomen," Not likely," she laughed, "Though I do know her."
Dawn turned away from Kyle at this. "You WHAT?" she asked abruptly.
Interesting reaction to an interesting answer, Kyle thought. 'Her?'
he let that slide across
his mind. Pourquoi pas? Why not?
Dawn blurred and he jerked back in the chair as she simply seemed to
flow from the sofa
arm to be standing in front of the redhead, her waist-length hair still
flying in the direction
of her last motion.
"Oops, " Glory pulled a hand up to cover her mouth. Her eyes were suddenly
big,
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
Tess looked at Dawn from her position near Glory on the couch, "I have
an invitation to
visit her, I think she's the woman I met on the tower the night after
the portals opened.
She lives in Sunnydale in a big villa outside town. I've gone
by, but haven't gotten the
courage up to call back and set up the visit."
"And this isn't important enough for either of you to tell me?" Dawn
was getting angry.
"Where does she fit into all this?" she waved her hands in graceful
motions that Kyle
found charmingly adult for her girl-form.
"This is all well and good and truly weird," he spoke up, "But why are you here anyway?"
"Shut up, Kyle!" all three said at once without bothering to even look
at him.
He shrugged and walked back into the kitchen.
They continued their animated discussion for a long time while he listened
in and tried to
follow it as he got a canned drink from the refrigerator. It was nice
to hear high-pitched
voices here again, even if they were arguing.
Girls were always of interest to him, philosophy pretensions aside.
He remembered when the wise-cracking Tess had moved in here and taken
over
his bedroom, going shamelessly through his clothes and magazines and
making jokes
about the post-its in one. He'd have given anything to relive that
period before Tess had
moved on to Max and he'd had to start thinking of her as his live-in
sister.
But what she did to Alex and himself was beyond forgiveness.
He took another deep swallow and re-focused on the three, who seemed
to have
resolved their disagreement. The pregnant redhead, Glory, the
god, so her blonde
alternate self had said, spoke to him, "Sorry 'bout that. Now back
to you," she gestured
and spoke something barely audible.
Dawn responded similarly, as did Tess.
They seemed relaxed now and Dawn sat down on the floor beside Glory,
who shape-
shifted back into Clare, who seemed to have taken over the role of
talking the most to
him.
"We're here," Clare said to him, "to help our Tess find out what happened
here in this
dimension to your Tess, since she merged with Curupira and not with
yours at the portal.
Our Tess believes that there's someone else involved, based on your
story and the feelings
she's had since she got here," Clare looked around to see if she'd
accurately summarized
their concerns.

© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/
Tess put a hand on Clare's arm as she continued, "Right. We just cast
a spell and determined
that there're still unexplained energies floating around this
house that don't have the
signature of your Tess. Just a trace, but evidence anyway. Also lots
of mindwarp residues
about you, Tess reports."
"We'd like you to get the others. Isabel, Max, Maria, Liz and Michael,
yeah, that's all the names,
to come to a meeting in the Crashdown place after it closes tonight.
We want to get to the
bottom of this. We feel that you've all been manipulated and that maybe
Tess wasn't the
primary source, maybe she was also deceived into doing what she did."
"It's a theory," Kyle acquiesced to the possibility and to getting started
on the phone calling.
"It's Friday and they should be there anyway then. Isabel'll be back
this weekend from
college, too. What should I tell them?"
"How about that we three have information about Tess? Which is sort
of true, since a Tess is
actually here," Dawn suggested.
Kyle watched the trio as he made his phone calls to leave messages,
some with others,
some as recordings. Only with Isabel was he able to make actual contact.
She'd come in
early.
Very briefly he felt a swimming
motion in his head. It disappeared quickly.
"I'll catch the
girls and tell them," she told him and hung up.
Kyle wondered why she didn't ask him more questions.

Isabel was frowning, but also elated at what
she'd seen in that flash of a highly precise
and long-practiced dreamwalk into Kyle's mind,
made more receptive by the intensive
mindwarping he'd endured in the spring.
"Isabel was frowning...she couldn't
change the past...or could she?"

If only...she couldn't change the past...or could she?
She had no particular plan, just the opportunity to see if there was
any way out before she
went crazy as a loon from the waiting. At least Lonnie and Nicholas
did not make a
appearance after the Las Cruces events and their almost fatal encounter
with Tess. .
Of course it was unlikely that Nicholas would ever, if Tess was successful,
as she appeared
to have been. God bless her mindwarp ability.
With the Granilith gone from earth, Lonnie'd have lost interest, as was to be expected.
Things had not gone exactly as they'd wished, but they'd achieved the
end results with
a bit of sheer luck, almost torpedoed by Liz's dogged efforts in trying
to ferret out what had
happened to Alex. That could have gotten all of them killed at
worse, or in the Granilith at
even worse.

Looking around her room, Isabel went to the simple three paper bags
that held all of Tess'
meager personal worldly belongings. Kyle had parted with them when
he cleaned out his room
to re-occupy it after the events at the Granilith chamber. Her clothes
were given away to
charity.
Tears formed in Isabel's eyes as she thought of the way they had treated
Tess all those
months. Every time she pulled out the address book, she felt a great
sadness, because there
were only three people listed in it.
All the people she thought of as her alien family:
Isabel Evans, Maxwell Evans
6025 Murray Lane, Roswell, N.M
Michael Guerin
502 Powell Avenue, Roswell, N.M.

Her handwriting, so lonely against the otherwise empty pages, was telling.
These were
the important people in her life and they treated her shamefully, sort
of a Roswell version
of the way Lonnie and Rath had tolerated pathetic Ava.
Yet, by the end she had successfully mindwarped even the powerful Nicholas
in the Crashdown,
saved all of them with her mindfire and even saved Maria in the UFO
center with a kick that
dusted the Skin Ida.

That weighed against the one Isabel had killed and the one Michael
had killed. Was that all ?,
She couldn't remember any others at the moment. Who was the greater
protector ?
In New York earlier, the month before Christmas, Tess had been called
"Your Genocidal
Girlfriend" by Nicholas at the summit.
He was the only survivor of her mindfire. She had also
unrememberingly apparently killed Rath in New York, but Lonnie had
obviously escaped to
join forces with Nicholas in their own "Plan B" quest for the Granilith's
powers and rewards.
Tess was the only one they really feared, but they had a deal even she could not refuse.
So much of what Tess had done was unexpected and brave, even so.
Why did she have to be where she was now, with everyone hating her?
Opening her desk, Isabel pulled out a picture of her and Alex. So many
things had been done,
and so much still had to be done. She had the will, but not the power.
So much for
alien superiority, she sighed and wiped the tears from her eyes.
'Grow up, Isabel,' she told herself half aloud. 'It's do, or die trying.'

Dawn was letting all that was going on soak into her mind, to be later
regurgitated as her
almost illegible narratives for the ones she had chosen to puzzle out
her handwriting and
get them online.
It was intriguing to watch them take shape when she and Curupira took
a dimensional walk
with a drop of her Key blood to that strange similar dimension where
all that was her
wonderfully full life was merely something to watch on TV, though twisted
into a version that
was only a weak reflection of what was her own reality since Glory
had succeeded and two
of the similar dimensions had already merged.
The girl that played her was named Michelle.
Dawn's 'publishers' had given her a number of tapes of Michelle's earlier
movie roles and told
her that they believed the monks had used her characters, Like "Harriet
the Spy" and later
ones to flesh out her past, personality and interests, since they had
no understanding of
what made teen girls tick.
Where they'd gotten the tapes was a mystery.
That, plus some of Buffy, was what made up Dawn. She'd gotten used to
it after becoming
the Slayer. Something the monks forgot was about periods. She
had not had one until
she found out she was the Key.
Then her confused body had taken over with a vengeance,
Cramps and all that accompanied them.

The side effect, though, was a catch-up spurt that had ballooned her
small boobs up a cup
size in only a month or two, adding more obvious nipples, plus
body changes that should
have happened earlier - if she'd had an earlier.
Of course, the whole periods thing had lasted for barely over three
months when Curupira's
bestowal kiss made her immortal and she no longer had them - forever.
She and Clare and
Tess had eventually discussed this at length. All three were in the
same boat, it seemed,
having traded future fecundity for immortality - two without choice.
and the the third without
adequate knowledge.
It had not proven to be a bad exchange - so far.
None of this seemed to have transpired in the other dimension's version.
'What a poor place to live,' she thought as she let the love of words
the monks had instilled
in her take over. "Clare," she touched the blonde's arm.
Kyle had been listening halfways as he made the calls, and added some
to other places
where any of them might be. If all the three said was true, it was
going to change everything,
as much or more as the alien hybrids existence itself had, he suspected.
He pretended to still be listening after the call was over. He tried
to follow the intriguing little
Slayer girl, Dawn, talking about something even more puzzling...
"...We've made several quicky-portal opening trips to that remaining
dimension that's sort of
like ours, but without all the magic and stuff we take for granted
here. Curupira showed me
how she and Tess had done it before using a drop of the other Dawn's
Key blood and the
two of them with a spell."
"My blood works even better, now that I'm immortal and have powers.
I've already been
getting ready to do it on my own, too, without Curupira, "because I'm
the Key."
Clare's response was curious, "That shouldn't be possible for you to
do. I thought you always
had to have Curupira along, like we did at the tower?"

Tess added more, "Since we were were at the original portal, all three
of us have been able to
sense weak places that are leakage point between dimensions. We believe
that Dawn might be
able to simply use the magic without actually pricking herself to get
a drop of blood."
"Sweetie," Clare said in Glory's voice, then reverting back to
her own, "Glory says that the way
things are going, that dimension probably will merge with ours within
two years. Be careful
of what you introduce and do there. Knowledge of our magics and our
ways may change
that dimension - either toward stability or toward merging instability."
"Yeah," Dawn answered smugly. "I'll be careful. I believe I'm doing the right thing with my works."
"But I also found out who the monks patterned me after, other than Buffy."
Dawn then told them
about the tapes she'd brought back. "It explains all the writing
stuff I can't stop doing."
Kyle was having trouble sorting all this out until now. They were making
no attempt to keep him
from listening either.
Tess and Clare looked blankly at her.
"You still don't get it?" Dawn was sprawled leaning way back on the
sofa so that she was looking
at Kyle upside down or, raising her head, looking at the girls right
side up. "But you do, don't you
Kyle?"

"It's obvious," he said slowly. "It's a riddle. How did the monks see
these movies that were in existence
only in another dimension where you're just a fictional character?"
God, he thought, I'm actually
believing this stuff enough to start understanding it.
"As Glory would say, " Dawn smiled," We have a winner." She often used
Glory's throwaway lines
these days. Being around her so much was rubbing off on her.
Things were about to get interesting. Her Slayer instincts were prickling.
