Comment: There
have been provided several versions of what actually happened
at the portal tower 5/22/01,
Apparently the portal-driven mergings caused some
confusion in the
initial months that were later sorted out as new information was
uncovered and incorporated
into "Dawn the Last Slayer's" narratives.

[continued from Part 3...]
"Max, "Glory asked, "where can we go that Isabel can't find us?"
Max thought, but he couldn't come up with any.
Kyle answered instead, "Let's go back to my house. Maybe she won't expect that."
After a few minutes they were back in the SUV,
with Clare morphed at the driver's seat.

She was quite unhappy with the tablecloth as
a wrap and said so more than once as she
followed Maria's car back to the Valenti home
on Olive. The cool leather seat was sticking
to her thighs and part of her rear where pieces
of the melted pantyhose still remained.
Kyle's father had come home after they'd left.
He'd been out of town for a state meeting most
of the day, having been reinstated after much
paperwork manipulation and coercion by the
FBI agent that had been with them when the Arizona
blue crystal escapade had come to an end.

It felt good to be back in the saddle again,
so to speak. Losing Tess from the house had
been hard. He still had trouble believing it.
Kyle had gone from broken-hearted to suppressed
anger over the summer. It wasn't pleasant to
watch.
Standing in the doorway, Sheriff Valenti watched
what he thought were the usual suspects pile
out of the maroon or red SUV with California
plates that he almost unconsciously memorized
from habit. It was new in Roswell, he suspected.
That was quite a drive.
Especially if the pregnant blonde girl did all the driving.
He classified them as they came into the entryway
light. Kyle was holding the hand of a little
brunette with hair to her waist. She was a bit
young for Kyle, he thought, until he saw her
gray eyes and the ageless look in them.
They were a lot like Tess'.
The blonde was not very tall either, but quite
pregnant,. Six months he guessed. She was also
wearing what looked like a sheet or something,
instead of a dress. And was barefoot, it seemed.
That was a driver's traffic violation, he remembered.

Then she smiled. Toothy and radiant. It almost
made him miss the green girl, green except for her
face, walking slowly behind Kyle. "Tess?" he
stepped aside as Kyle mouthed a "Hi", and stopped her
from going in the door with the rest. She looked
at him rather blankly. Beyond her he could see the
others on the yard, all except Isabel.
Then she changed into Tess right before his eyes.
"Yes," she said slowly, "but not your Tess. I'm
from California." She brushed past him and left him
staring at her. The others filed past him. Each
one said some variation of the same thing as they did
so, that she wasn't 'your' Tess.
"More aliens?" he sighed. And he'd so liked getting his job back. Apparently that wouldn't last.
Inside, he closed the door and found them scattered
into two groups in the den. The 4 from the
SUV, including Kyle, were on the sofa and its
arms. The 4 from Maria's were at the dinette table.
"Where's Isabel and who are you kids?" he asked
as he entered the room and walked toward the
kitchen. The pregnant blonde, whom he decided
was not exactly one since she was only a few
months from motherhood, held out her hand. "Clare,"
she said, This is Tess, who is also Curupira,
a friendly demon, and Dawn, the Vampire Slayer
from Sunnydale. I'm also sharing a body with
the god Glory."
"She's resting now, but you can talk to her later."

Primly, for one wearing only a tablecloth, she
settled back on the sofa.
As if that explained it all.
He touched her offered hand and then continued
into the kitchen. He'd learned to curb his curiosity
where these aliens were concerned. For the first
time he noticed that Michael was also wearing
the same type of garment as the blonde.
It looked suspiciously like a tablecloth from the Crashdown. Now he had to be curious.
He forgot about his Isabel question. "I assume,"
he stopped and turned to face Clare, "That
that was the good news and I'm about to hear
the bad now?"
"Uh...yeah," she said, nodding 'yes' also.
So Clare gave him the capsule story of the things
that had happened since their arrival this morning
in Roswell. She left out Liz and Kyles' immortality
bestowals for the moment.
"And," she finished, "Isabel's run off after fighting
Glory. She seems to have acquired a substantial
collection of magic and superpowers during the
bestowal, in addition to immortality. Added to her
own powers and potential powers, she's extremely
dangerous."
"But," Valenti said carefully, "None of you are new aliens, except your Tess?"
"True," Clare replied.
Finding himself to be in the presence only of
a demon sharing the body with another Tess, a
pregnant god sharing a body with the blonde and
a woefully young Vampire Slayer, Valenti was
actually relieved.
"That's it?" he asked.
Clare hesitated, looked around and answered, "Well, Curupira, the green
girl, made Liz immortal
before the...problem...Tess had with Isabel."
Raising his head briefly to look at the far wall, as if he expected
to see a hidden camera, he made
what sounded like another sigh, "And Isabel's went wrong. Now you want
me to help...again?"
"It's a long and tortured tale," Kyle's sudden new girlfriend, the Dawn
girl, spoke quietly. "Tess...
Curupira needs some quick food for energy, maybe Glory also. They both
need a place to rest
and sleep tonight. I can sleep on the floor, but I'm not leaving
them," her voice was firm but
polite. "Tomorrow, if we all survive the night, I'll call my sister
and her Glory. They'll do something."
Liz spoke up, "Max and I'll take you to the Crashdown and you can see all the damage."
Max was still looking as if he were ashamed of what Isabel had done.
He was also having trouble
getting used to the new assertive Liz as she simply took his arm and
practically dragged him
toward the door with her new found strength. "Being immortal, I need
lots of food. I'll get mine at
the cafe. I'll bring some back for you, Kyle. Speed it up, Max."
Valenti wasn't born yesterday. "You, too? Dawn?" he guessed from the
way they were till holding
hands. Both nodded. At least she wasn't one of the aliens. "What does
a Vampire Slayer do ?"
he asked, knowing the response would not make it easier on him.

"I slay vampires, of course," Dawn responded, "also occasional dragons,
evil demons, all of the the
Knights of Byzantium and..." she paused, "Actually, most of the time
I'm just sort of a teen girl
with a few eccentric friends and some peculiar abilities, including
immortality." She looked at
Kyle and laughed pleasantly.
Shaking his head, Valenti followed Liz and Max out the door.
"Think they'll be OK?" Dawn asked Clare.
"I doubt Isabel'll be back at the cafe tonight. If she wants to hurt
anyone, it'd be Glory or me.
But, this time, she'll have more to contend with." Clare held onto
her wrap with both hands
and blurred in one step to reappear in the far corner of the kitchen,
accompanied by
a substantial breeze.
Dawn's mouth fell open as she followed the pregnant blonde's superspeed
flow automatically.
Tess' eyes tracked her too, as supergirls as are wont to to.
Restraightening her wrap, Clare placed both hands on her belly and actually
cooed, "How was that,
baby? Our first blur together." Dawn noticed that her hair had taken
on a Glory coppery red
tint during the blur, though it was gradually returning to blonde now.

Dawn was struck dumb.
From the very beginning, that first night she'd spent talking with the
host to Glory until they
fell asleep. Talking, as they lay in bed surrounded by the moving boxes
and her new acquisitions,
Dawn had understood her as an unwilling, but cooperative passive player
in Plan-B.
[Ed. See Dawn the Last Slayer, Part 2 for their first meeting in ~July 2001.]
She had no powers beyond those an immortal made by a god could have.
Yet she'd just
casually used a rare superpower and was talking to the baby as only
Glory had done in the past.
"Surprised?" Clare walked slowly out of the kitchen and stopped in front
of Dawn and Kyle.
Maria and Michael watched with great puzzlement. Tess simply sat and
observed.
"I helped Glory during the bestowal with Isabel by sequestering massive
portions of her magic
energy in the reservoirs she'd built for me to help prevent her slipping
completely into the baby
at birth, where she'd be repeating the Ben thing we discussed
earlier today. I also made new
ways on the spot to store magic and energy."
"It kept her viable enough to fight Isabel as I fed some of it back
to her. I also helped her magically
several times," she left that up to Dawn's imagination.
"Now, per Glory, I'm no longer the mere host. I'm something more.
We're still sorting it out, but one
benefit is that, like Glory. I can now touch minds with my, our baby.
For the first time, I can feel what
she'll become. Until she grows out of girlhood and Glory leaves me
completely for her god-body,
she'll be ours and mine to raise."
Clare looked around the room, then said, "Until the Crashdown bestowal
and its aftermath, I was
an outsider. I believed that one year this nightmare would end, I'd
have found my lost sister long
before, and Glory-in-our-daughter would reward me with magic and more
powers."
"Then I could find a new life as an immortal with an immortal sister."
"That," Clare declared, "Is no longer the case. This is my life, my
destiny."

"I'm now in the process, Glory thinks, because of the bestowal event
interacting via the pregnancy
umbilical link with our god-girl, being slowly transformed into a god
of some strange, never before
conceived sort. She thinks it'll complete at birth. What she and I'll
be like afterward, we're still
guessing at."
With that, Clare gestured magically and unexpectedly. The entire Valenti
home was suffused with
a cloud of green firefly-like lights that winked about and then settled
on the walls and ceilings before
stopping their light.
"Protective barrier and early warning, Glory's been busy, not just entirely
resting " she said and then
went back into the kitchen to find something to eat. 'Now that she
was eating for three also, that must
make six all together,' she smiled at the GloryMath. Hell, ClareMath
now, too.
Later, after scrounging meals from cans, Dawn put Clare and Tess to
bed. They barely fit on Kyle's
twin bed, but Tess insisted that she'd always felt safe on it. Clare,
now clad in one of Kyle's
shirts and a pair of his jockey shorts, put her arm around the still
weak Tess, pulled her onto her
shoulder and listened to her very slow breathing in the dark.
One day soon she'd be sleeping with her very own god-girl. Hers by right
of birth and by right
of magic.

As of now she could not even guess what the near or far future would
bring her and her god-girl,
who would one year be Glory. What would both be like? Would they be
like god-sisters? What
would it mean to be a real god? She had to find a purpose, a long-term
goal.
As she fell asleep, she dreamed of a great palace, herself and her daughter-sister
Glory sitting
at a round banquet table. About the table were all her friends
from Sunnydale, her lost sister,
others from Roswell, many others she did not recognize, except for
Buffy and her Glory.

That Glory was standing, holding a golden goblet high in a toast, 'To
all the gods here and to all
those who look like me and those who love me. To the new Pantheon.
May we see happiness and
joy forever..' Clare fell asleep with a smile on her face.
Somewhere a wisp of faraway incalculable power touched her and Tess.
It caressed both on the cheek
and then disappeared, quite satisfied. What had started in Sunnydale
at the tower was continuing
in Roswell.
...
Dawn awoke briefly and rolled over in her blankets on the floor of Kyle's room
She saw that Kyle had come in later and was asleep that way also, only
an arm's distance from her.
She wondered if their attraction would eventually lead to what Buffy
and Angel had. Somehow she
had never thought of that and herself. It seemed so far in the future.
She fell asleep again without dreams.
...
Outside, a shape, half-seen, flitted about like
a shadow. Half-visible until nearing the barrier that lay
inside the Valenti home. The spell was intensely
powerful and bore a signature like Glory's, but with
a twist of something else. Had she gotten help
from someone else already?

"Clare?" Isabel said softly with confused
surprise and backed away a bit before disappearing down
Olive Street, She'd verified that this Tess was
okay and that all the others were asleep. She frowned
at the spell. They feared her.
It made her sad, but she had a higher goal.

She laughed in the moonlight. Her bruises were
mostly healed now. She was also not almost naked
anymore. She pulled the door open on the car
she'd stolen near her home earlier. It actually was the
second one she'd tried. She'd pulled the door
completely off the first one with her newly acquired
strength.
Guiltily, she'd left a wad of her hundred dollar
bills stuck in the CD player. She'd have to make some
more soon.
Isabel was quickly on the road out of Roswell.
She turned on the radio and began to sing along with the
music. She was headed for a very specific spot
that she'd visited every weekend since May in her futile
attempts to break into the chamber under the
Granilith.
This time would be different, she knew.
...
After a lot of moaning and groaning, most in the Valenti house were
up from restless sleep, except for the
ones that got the two beds.
They ate breakfast made by Liz, Dawn and Maria. More food had been brought
in near midnight by Valenti,
Max and Liz. The spell Clare had cast seemed to not be triggered by
any of them. Dawn marveled at that
almost as much as Clare's superspeed demo.
Not just a barrier and alarm spell, but one that was dynamically able
to recognize individuals. Could
she really be that sophisticated already? Maybe all her reading and
morphed out spare time had
not been as wasted as Dawn had assumed, just from seeing Glory at her
endless hours of watching
satellite TV movies and soaps.
Maria was watching all the immortals eating as much as two or three
of the others. She was envious
of little Liz in particular. "No more diets," Liz laughed. No
more periods. No more sickness. Lots more.
She reached for another four rolls.
Glory had morphed in briefly, stuffed herself and now Clare was doing
the same.
Curupira and Tess did much the same, though their magic was more shared..
"Healthy girls, these immortals," Valenti observed. "A little high maintenance,
unless you own a
supermarket!"
That got a laugh from most everyone.
Taking him seriously, Clare gave him one of Glory Hall's bottomless
credit cards. "Let Kyle bring it
back when he's in Sunnydale visiting Dawn," she suggested coyly. Dawn
blushed prettily. "Maybe
also to find some clever way to pay Liz' parents back for the damage
at the cafe," Clare suggested.
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/G
"I've got plenty others," she dumped hers and Glory's purse out on
the table. There were at least
two dozen credit cards of all flavors amid the lipstick, eye liner
and other girl stuff. Clare raked
them all back into the small purse and dropped it back on the floor
at her feet.
"Pat keeps track of the finances. As far as I know it's all magic,"
she added, watching Curupira to
see if there were any reaction from yesterday's revelations. The green
girl kept on eating.
Clare got up, already taking her role seriously.
"Ready, Maria?" she walked around to where she sat crowded beside Michael.
The others were
elsewhere at the table, the counter or eating in the den.
"What?" Maria responded.
"Immortality, honey, immortality," Clare said nonchalantly, as if she'd done it a thousand times before.
Dawn reacted with disbelief. "Yesterday you were afraid Curupira would
slash your face, today you
believe you can bestow immortality?
Clare looked directly at Dawn.
"Not too long ago you weren't even alive. You were a thing. Then you
became a fake sister to
Buffy. A few months later you were only the Key. Now you're an immortal.
The Key-born Last Slayer
and a supergirl, a near-god."

"Yesterday," Clare continued with the zeal of a convert, "I was a pregnant
girl carrying the child of
a god only a third mine. Today, I'm almost a god myself. Changes one's
perspective a bit."
"And yes," she said more gently, "I can bestow immortality. And lots
more. Watch and learn, sweet
naive Slayer."
"Ready or not!" Clare looked at Maria's upturned face, reached over,
cupped her neck and bent to
kiss her. It was more intense and shorter lived than Liz and Kyle's
had been. It only took about 30
seconds. Maria's full lips were glowing with a green light for several
minutes after the kiss was over
and Clare was already back calmly eating again.

"Ready or not!" Clare looked
at Maria's.. face...

"She's not a virgin," Clare commented. "No orgasm."
Liz glared at Maria, who made a face at her.
Having finally finished eating, Clare got up again and opened her purse
to pull out a small plastic
bag with a rubber band around it. Inside was what looked like a clear
crystal marble.
"Magic call home tracker from Buffy and the other Glory," she said without further explanation.
Dawn immediately objected. "Why didn't they give it to me? How does it work?"
"Glory's not that concerned about you. You can take care of yourself.
But she cares about our baby and
me and our Glory. Bet you didn't know that, did 'ya?"
"She sure covers well," Dawn admitted. "Why didn't you use it at the Crashdown?
"I wasn't the one morphed in and we were holding our own anyway," Clare said tartly.
"Let's pull the couch and the furniture to the walls in the den," she
ordered, "unless you want
Glory to vaporize it when she comes in and finds she's meeting a solid
object,"
They did.
Sensing that something spectacular was about to happen that would make
what they'd seen
the last two days seem like card tricks, everyone retreated to the
kitchen and dinette area.
Clare simply kissed the marble and tossed to the center of the room.

Seconds passed. Then a minute.
"Maybe they're not home?" Maria joked...
There was a bang.
Air rushed from the center of the den and everything
froze for a few seconds.
Glory and Buffy were just there.
Standing back-to-back in the center of
the den.
"Five seconds." Buffy called out in a calm
voice. "No problem here."
She was facing away from the dinette. "Four
seconds,"
"I see all of them and some locals. Frozen,"
Glory said.
"Three seconds," Buffy counted down.
"No others. Two local demon-human hybrids like
Tess. Kill?"
"Two seconds and 'No' on the kill," Buffy
said rapidly.
"One second."
"Time."

Glory and Buffy were just there,
Standing back-to-back in the center of the den.
Then the bang and the air hit them.
Glory, dressed in a flowing black evening gown, said loudly, "What are
you
village idiots doing standing around? What've my favorite three stooges
been
doing in this unfortunate town?
Wearing a gray and red dress that Dawn wasn't aware she owned, Buffy
rushed over to
Dawn and hugged her. "Are you okay, Dawnie?"
"Ummph," Dawn wriggled in Buffy's powerful embrace. She wondered what
else her Glory
had bestowed on her beyond immortality. Kyle grabbed for her closest
hand. Buffy released
her and looked at Dawn and then at Kyle in sudden comprehension.
Glory made a similar beeline for Clare and put her arm around her shoulder.
"No problems
with Glory, the baby or you?" She felt Clare's tummy and smiled. "So
why did you call home?"
Clare quickly gave her a summary about Isabel and the loss of magic
energy to her.
The others had pulled away from the aggressive redhead.

Glory let Clare loose and walked past the Roswellians.
"Human..."
"Demon, new immortal by Curupira..."
"Demon, new immortal...by Clare...?" She looked back at Clare. "We have to talk, sweetie."
"Dawn, new immortal by...Dawn...?" What is this, a freebie clinic for
the mortality challenged?"
She looked hard at Dawn and Kyle holding hands again. "Growing
up are we, honey?"
Looking at Kyle, "Hurt her and I'll kill you. And all your friends
and maybe the whole town."
"Yes, ma'am, your highness, your majesty..." he managed to get out.
Unlike the pregnant
Glory, this one oozed power and and the inclination to act and ask
questions later.
"Joke," Glory laughed, "...Maybe."
Copyright
© 2001 gloryisagod.com/DS/G
"Good enough. He's polite and relatively clean," Glory walked abruptly
away
to Tess. Without a pause, she swept her up and kissed her on
the mouth to began
a bestowal of enormous power on the little blonde and her morphing
Curupiran self.
It lasted for nearly a minute and was accompanied by a series of discharges
that
bounced about them. Glory released her. Tess looked healthy but a little
high.
"Anybody tries that again with her and they'll be surprised, and very dead."
"Seriously, girls, what do you expect when you go around bestowing on
strangers
and even a demon hybrid girl?"
Glory sat down on the couch that was against the glassed cabinet. She
pulled the
almost floating Tess onto the couch beside her and motioned Clare over.
"Talking time with you and Glory. Buffy, take Dawn and find out why
this barrier
didn't alarm when the demon visited last night. Side window." she pointed,
"Outside."
The pregnant Glory morphed in and had a long low discussion with the
other Glory
on the couch.
This gave the Roswellians a chance to breathe again after Glory's lightening
arrival
and subsequent immediate flurry of take-charge actions. Max wondered
if Isabel
knew what wrath she had incurred by her actions. He sensed that this
Glory was
like the pregnant one's big sister, very big sister.
What was Isabel doing and why?
Buffy and Dawn came back inside and reported that the third demon hybrid,
definitely the
one from the Crashdown, Isabel, had come up to the house, tested the
barrier without
alarming it, and left in a car down the block.
"There was another car following her," Buffy said. Dawn believes the
faint signature is
very much like that of Isabel, but different. "Some sort of power cloaking
ability also,"
Buffy added.
"Lonnie?" Michael and Max both guessed at the same time.
"Well, if this Lonnie encounters Isabel, she's toast. Isabel's off the
charts. Dawn told me
more about what happened. This Isabel was able to blur, fight and run
on walls and ceilings
within a very short time of the bestowal."
Buffy was impressed, she was retired from slaying, but Glory had endowed
her with every
thing they could think of, just in case. They needed to look
into this wall and ceiling running
power, soon.
After more discussions and a visually spectacular scrying spell of some
kind that failed to
locate Isabel out to the local horizon, Glory announced that she and
Buffy were leaving.
"We were at a party," she noted. Before she left she enhanced Clare's
barriers and
alarms.
Taking Buffy's left hand, Glory simply said said one phrase to herself,
flipped her right wrist and
the two vanished. There was a breeze inward as the air rushed to replace
where they had been.
"Scary bitch!" Liz spoke for them all. She walked up to the pregnant
Glory and gave her a
friendly hug. "I like you lots better and I'm sorry for what Isabel
did." Then she hugged Tess.
She even hugged Dawn.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing. The five immortal girls talked
and ignored the guys
watching college football on TV. Dawn ordered pizza and stuff and paid
with one of Glory's
credit cards.

She even managed to drag Kyle away from the den to eat. She was beginning
to
try to change him already, Valenti observed sagely.

Good luck, Kyle, he thought. This little girl might just succeed, where
Tess had given up
and gone elsewhere. He wondered what it would be like to have a Vampire
Slayer in the
family, plus all her bizarre friends.
At least they could keep the all the aliens in line, he decided. Besides,
I could go for some
of that immortality myself, he realized.
...
Isabel turned off the road that led to the Granilith. humming to herself
as she navigated
the sandy road's curves between rocks and boulders. She was soon near
the base of the
great sloping rock that was like a ship rising out of the sea of sand.

Shading her eyes from the late morning sun, she looked around, remembering
the last time she
and all the others had been here and apparently watched Tess launched
in the Granilith.
Chuckling nervously to herself, Isabel jogged up the path she'd had
to walk with difficulty
even last week. Quite a difference with her new, as yet barely tried
powers.
Near the top, she placed her hand on the hidden hand print and the door slid open.
Crawling through the opening she'd broken in the back of one of the
pods so long ago,
Isabel stood up in the Granilith chamber. It looked empty without the
towering conical structure
that was just the bottom of the larger structure.
What she wanted was somewhere beneath the still glowing white base on the floor in the center.
What she wanted was somewhere

Kneeling beside the base, she tried a dreamwalk. Tess was below somewhere.
In some sort
of stasis that had taken over when the Granilith reached launch time,
Until then both she
and Tess had been able to open it with their ever increasing. powers.
It was the place for Tess to hide as she mindwarped those around her
into believing that the
mindwarped Nicholas was her. That part was successful and Nicholas
was the one in the base
cone of the Granilith when it left.
He believed that a pregnant Tess. plus Lonnie, were with him until the last seconds.
It was only later that Isabel slipped back in as the others talked outside
and discovered
that she could no longer open the base, nor could she dreamwalk Tess
very well. She was
alive but in some sort of stasis protective state in the Granilith
base.
Unreachable by Isabel. And she was slowly dying as her life forces ebbed
away some
each week.
That was about to change.
Lonnie was amazed by what she saw from her position
behind one of the pods, barely peeking in
at what must be the Granilith. Or not, she realized
as Isabel began hitting the white thing in the center.
The few humans she'd dared even surface mindprobe
in Roswell included the hick sheriff and Liz.
They'd believed that Tess was gone in the Granilith.
But she was always suspicious ever since
Tess and Isabel had agreed to their blackmail
in Las Cruces.
Nicholas ignored her, of course.
Nicholas and Lonnie had tracked Isabel's
apparent boyfriend, Alex, to the dorm at the university
there.
Tess and Isabel agreed to take them on the Granilith,
if they left Alex alone to research the
translation of the instructions and didn't harm
the others. The icing on the cake was that Tess
was pregnant, another mindwarp. Only she would
go with them, double-crossing the other aliens.
That had appeal to Nicholas and Lonnie also.
Naturally, Tess and Isabel had double-crossed
them. Based on what she remembered after she
awoke in an isolated cave near here three weeks
after the launch, she had been badly and
roughly mindwarped, then beaten senseless.
Only her powers had allowed her to survive, but
she'd lost three weeks of memories. She now
believed that Isabel and Tess had set them up
from the moment they had found Alex.
Now Isabel was dangerously powerful and was back here, Why?
Lonnie tried a surface search mindprobe and found
Tess immediately!
But she was essentially unconscious in some manner.
Lonnie stayed plugged in to Tess, realizing that
the Granilith structure forces were
masking her probe from Isabel's now continuous
dreamwalk. She had the inkling of an
idea, dangerous, but if she didn't get greedy...

Isabel had easily demolished the previously impregnable
white base cover with her bare hands.
She examined the pieces but could not see any
sign of the doorway she and and Tess had used
so many times before in planning this.
Already she could feel the stasis forces pulling
at her mind, but she told them to go away and they
vanished. Magic was sure more easily controlled
than her alien powers. Providing you had the
structure and power and energy at hand. So far
she had learned only self-protection and power
abilities. Bestowal she already knew.
Her apparently invulnerable body constantly amazed her, though.
She jumped down to the floor beneath. It was farther
down than she remembered. It had sunk
for some reason, revealing more rooms all around.
These were of no interest to her.
Then she saw Tess lying in a thin layer of dust.
Isabel could see her small footprints in the dust
to where she yielded to the stasis forces and
fallen on her back.
Kneeling beside the girl, Isabel said all
the magic phrases she'd filtered out of her chaotic
copy of parts of Tess and Curupira's minds. Putting
herself in the bestowal mindset that
Tess had had, Isabel placed her mouth on Tess
very cold lips, used her fingers on her jaw
to open her up to the wet kiss and...
...nothing happened, She breathed several times
into Tess' mouth. Maybe she needed to
do...come on, she thought. What else had the
other Tess done... Relax and let it happen...
The fire in her exploded into a river of energy and magic that poured into Tess.
She saw her eyes flutter.
Tess saw Isabel's face on hers. Isabel was also
mindwalking her, able now to tell her
to take the energy and magic and become immortal.
Lonnie carefully let only the concepts and patterns
flow into her mind and body.
If she got greedy. Isabel, or now even Tess,
since she was awake, would kill her like
swatting a fly.

She siphoned off energy and magic enough so that
she got the basics, but only enough
energy to start the process. She realized that,
once started the immortality process
and the magic powers were self-sustaining, needing
only energy and time.
The primary source was apparently food. But Lonnie
suspected she could soon extract
energy directly from others with an enhanced
mindprobe.
To that end she kept at her dangerous tactic until
Tess was fully awake and Isabel was
jumping out of the under-chamber with her.
Lonnie fled with her precious power, the irony
of a thief stealing from a thief made her very
happy.
Tess spoke her first words at the entrance where
Isabel deposited her. She wasn't going to
stop inside the chambers for fear of another
surprise by the idiot Granilith makers. "And what
did you just do to me...I feel wonderful and
different."
Isabel propped her against the rock in a sitting
position and sat down beside her. She began
brushing Tess' dusty curls from her face and
and shoulders before lightly kissing her on the
forehead. "I saved you by deceit and got magic
powers.
"We have to leave. They'll be looking for us, but we're now free to do what we want."
"Did I succeed?", Tess looked into her big sister's eyes with near adoration.
"You sure did, honey, little Nickey went home
empty-handed. I doubt anyone will be very happy
with only the Granilith. Assuming that even half
of that crap about planets and kings is true,:
she added.
Tess remembered the many terrible weeks when she
had to mindwarp almost everyone to keep their
secret while Alex willingly toiled away, encouraged
by occasional furtive visits by Isabel and
Tess.
Then Lonnie and Nicholas had discovered Alex.
They threatened to kill him and others in Roswell
unless they got the Granilith. Tess and Isabel
had offered them a more complex deal instead.

The hoped for resolution was to get Lonnie and
Nicholas off earth with no one else. Hence the
mindwarp pregnancy as irresistible bait.
"Where's Lonnie?" Tess asked letting the morning
fall breeze flow across her face as Isabel
massaged her arms and neck. Five months
without moving was tough even for a new immortal,
Isabel had told her.
"I killed her," Isabel admitted. "You mindwarped
her to come here. I caught her behind some rocks
down the road a bit and beat her brains out with
another rock. I stuffed her body into a little cave
nearby. She doesn't deserve to have a future
for what she tried to do to you, Alex, Max and Ava."
"Alex?" she wondered.
"I talked to him and he really is in Sweden this
time. I told him to come back when he felt like it. He's
gotten some sort of work-university offer in
Sweden from a computer firm, though." Isabel was
vague about the details.
After awhile, they got up and headed down for the car.
Inside the car, Isabel helped the still shaky Tess into the passenger side and buckled her in.
As she started it and turned around, Tess put
her hand on Isabel's arm, "You're the bestest
sister I never knew I had. And you did all this
to save me," Tess kissed her cheek and leaned
her head on Isabel's shoulder.

Isabel remembered when Alex had first began to
report that the records had been tampered with
and that he thought he could extract the originals
from the book by examining the oxidation levels
on the cut edges.
That was how they knew all would be killed, but a pregnant Tess, if they returned home.
Also, that the summit information was mostly a
charade designed to extract the Granilith from them.
The only Vilandra was Lonnie. There was no king
except for a putative son of Tess. It was all deceit.
The only real thing was that Isabel and Tess
were sisters.
Max was not her brother.
Even their hybrid bodies were almost identical,
based on their DNA tests in Las Cruces. Max was
nowhere close to either, but was apparently a
brother to Michael.
One day they'd have to tell them.
Back out on the highway, Tess said apologetically, "I'm hungry, really hungry."
Isabel told her she'd stop at the first decent
place open on Sunday morning. "I've already discovered that
I have to eat like a horse to keep up my magic
energy. I'll go over what I know and show you how to
dig through the caches of copied memories from
the 'donors'."
"So what do we do now, big sis?" Tess was still
leaning her head on Isabel's shoulder, happy at their
reunion.
"Go west, young alien, go west," Isabel sort of
sang it. Tess laughed. "I know of a place called Sunnydale
that's full of strange things, sort of a Roswell
West. All we need is some of the blood of a certain little
Vampire Slayer and we can be off to parts unknown,
since we have all the potential powers of several
of the supergirls, as they apparently call themselves."
Tess said it aloud, "Supergirls. I like that. We're immortal supergirls... and aliens, too. So we're unique!"
A bit later, as they were in the first restaurant
along the way, Isabel watched her little sister eat happily for
a few minutes before picking up her own fork.
'Yeah, she thought, 'she had real family responsibilities now.
No parents, just her and Tess'. And all their
new powers.
It felt good.
Lonnie almost bumped into them before she realized
that they'd stopped to eat, too.
She hurriedly walked back to her stolen
car and drove west for another restaurant.
Already, Lonnie was feeling the early pangs of
immortality and magic power hunger.

After long farewells, Clare tried to drive the
SUV away, but Dawn was still hanging out the
real door window for the last kiss from Kyle.
"Come on, kids! she said Mommy-like. "Save it
for his trip to Sunnydale."
They finally left.
Dawn was immediately on her cell phone calling him. Tess rolled her eyes.
As they neared the restaurant where Isabel and
the other Tess were eating, Clare
noticed a trucker staying right up with her.
She saw what he was trying to do and
did the Glory thing with him. He quickly sped
up as she kept her black-nailed finger
against the window.
Tess laughed. Dawn groaned. "You're picking up
her bad habits, too," she said before
getting back on her phone.
Lonnie actually recognized the maroon SUV from
the Crashdown as it rolled past at
well over the speed limit. Be seeing you soon,
Vampire Slayer, just a few drops
of blood and a new world to explore.
[Ed.- The following short section
is appended 10/9/01 from part way into the next work
( "Isabel
& Tess - Three Days in Sunnydale") because
it indicates that things in
Roswell are far more complicated than it seemed to the supergirls on the
road
to Sunnydale. Obviously there's some future link with the later-listed
DTLS work
"Isabel & Tess - Last Portal to Roswell".]
She walked out of the room onto the dusty circular
floor, looked up with no memory of where she
was. As she tried to recall, the floor rose like
a big elevator and she instinctively scrambled
to the chamber above.
It took a few moments of following the lighted
walls of the many-sided chamber to see the
lower entryway through what she now knew was
one of the pod chambers.
Outside she quickly desired to leave and opened the door to the fresh air of a fall afternoon.
Somewhat fearfully she looked at her hands and
felt her face and body.

Who was she?
Many names flitted through her confused mind.
Lonnie, Vilandra, Isabel, Tess, Curupira,
Glory. Clare. Her body told her she matched
none of the smaller girls images she had, nor was
she pregnant.

So she must be Isabel or Lonnie or Vilandra.
Or perhaps all.
She remembered touching the minds of a powerful
girl named Isabel, who was saving one
of the smaller girls on the round floor outside
the room where she, herself, lay in some
half-alive state after a past terrible merging.
They were unknowingly also sharing some of the
magical energy and power with another, maybe
Lonnie?
Regardless, she had ridden the sharing herself
to break out of her state. And
succeeded, after awhile of resting and sorting
out the powers that allowed her to awake.
They were remarkable and she'd been able to assimilate
them rapidly, though she was
very hungry.
Looking at the barren landscape between her and
Roswell, she decided that she must be
Isabel with the merged, probably via some Granilith
event, memories of several other look-
alikes.
These other memories were part of the bestowals.
She shook her head and thrust them aside for future
study. "I'm Isabel..." she said aloud.
Gathering all her meager residual magic strength,
she gestured magically.
Liz and Maria were helping sweep out the Crashdown
of glass and other stuff in preparation
for the rebuilding and redecoration of the wrecked
interior of the cafe.
Liz jumped as Isabel materialized in front of her. "Hi, Liz," she said casually. "I'm hungry."
Maria headed for the phone to call Michael and
Max, while a panicked, but resourceful,
Liz was busy passing as much food as she could
find to the big blonde. Isabel, or whoever
she thought she was, was devouring it as fast
as Liz could drop it on the counter.
"Can Roswell get any weirder?" she said aloud
as the phone rang at the Evans home.
